WPS Day 3: Be Your Own Boss Conference

Day 3 of Werk Pray Slay included the main event, the Be Your Own Boss Conference (BYOB). The BYOB Conference was EVERYTHING and more! The speakers did not come to play. Not only did they motivate and inspire us, but they also gave us some actions that we could immediately apply to our businesses to see tangible results.

Speaker L’areal Lipkins, author of “A Woman With Vision” gave us 5 Beliefs Keeping You From Securing the Bag and Dr. Nicole Garner Scott of The Garner Circle gave us some tips on how to Make Room For Wealth. Both presentations centered around the importance of changing your mindset.

Tips from Dr. Nicole Garner Scott

Money goes where it is appreciated, and stays where it’s treated well. Spend your money wisely.
Find people in your life that you can have financial synergy with. Create a list of people that you connect with to build your business with.
Pay your bills on time. That energy will return to you and train you to operate out of abundance.
Create a wealth mentality. Write down your financial goals and create a financial plan to design what your life will look like.
Get into the spirit of giving.
Operate with a sense of urgency. Write out a get out of debt goal and make steps to reach those goals. Don’t be satisfied until those goals are accomplished!

These ladies were dropping some powerful gems! I’m totally ready to get my finances completely in order and build some generational wealth!

After taking in those gems, it was time for a quick break. The breaks is where the networking took place. Numbers, business cards, and social media handles were exchanged with the hopes of making some life changing connections. Then, we met back up for a “lunch and learn” hosted by Nicole McClaren-Campbell. Nicole talked about the one thing that has kept most of us from achieving our goals, PROCRASTINATION. She took us to school by giving us some ways to beat procrastination: 1. Prioritize your essentials from the non-essentials 2. No more multi-tasking – you never complete anything by multi-tasking 3. Set up your tasks, and complete them 4. If you don’t have a skill, hire someone to teach you or do it for you.

Next, Takesha Pratt gave us some honest insight into her life as the CEO of her own travel agency, Trip Spicer. She is literally turning her side hustle in to a six figure business!!! She stated that the main reason she has had such success with her travel agency is amazing customer service and repeat customers – Another major gem for small business owners.

The #ForTheCulture Panel followed Takesha Pratt’s presentation. The panel featuring Lakia Brandenburg, Dr. Key Hallmon, Sonia Lewis, Chek Ahki, and Dr. Tiffanie Davis Henry. This panel’s purpose was to create dialogue around the necessary steps needed to push the black community, specifially black women, forward. The conversation topics spanned from sex education to breaking generational curses. The panelists also discussed student loans and ways to help our future children avoid them.

Koereyelle finished off the conference by dropping more gems during her keynote speech! She gave us 7 lessons that she’s learned since starting the Werk Pray Slay Conference.

Those 7 Lessons are:

There’s something that God created you to be that only you were called to do.
You have the skills to pay the bills.
God is waiting on you.
You can’t get to the prize without respecting the process.
Take calculated risks.
You can’t afford to get caught up in what someone else is called to do.
Invest in what you believe in.

Later guests were directed to get our shopping on with some dope vendors. And believe me, they were super dope!

Breakout sessions followed. Guests were able to choose between 6 sessions (The Basics of Blogging, Werk, Pray, Slay & RECORD: Using Video to Slay Your Personal Brand, Breakout Fashionista Steps to Starting Your Online Boutique, Website Ready: From Plan to Paid, Success Without Sacrificing Sanity, and Be Your Own Publicist). This option was available for those who needed more in-depth lessons in their respective areas of business.

I can’t imagine that anyone left this building the same as when they walked in. We were given real action steps to take, not just motivation. So, businesses will grow from here and success will grow from here. The Be Your Own Boss Conference (BYOB) really showed out this year. And let’s not forget the overflow of Black Girl Magic. Magic was everywhere!
