As a first-time expectant mom, I had no idea what should be in my hospital bag. But after a lot of research, I created a Hospital Bag Essentials list for myself and I figured I’ll share it with my future moms. Because I know what’s it’s like to have no ideas what to pack.

Preparing a hospital bag for labor and delivery is an essential step for expectant parents. Having everything ready in advance can help ensure a smoother and more comfortable experience. Here’s a list of items to include in your hospital bag: Your Hospital Bag Essentials

  1. Important Documents:
    • Photo ID, driver’s license, or passport
    • Health insurance information and hospital paperwork
    • Birth plan (if you have one)
  2. Comfortable Clothing:
    • Loose-fitting nightgowns or pajamas (front-opening if planning to breastfeed)
    • Robe or dressing gown
    • Slippers or comfortable, non-slip socks
    • Underwear (consider disposable too. I ordered a pack from Amazon)
    • Nursing bras (if planning to breastfeed. I love these HERE from Amazon)
  3. Toiletries:
    • Toothbrush and toothpaste
    • Hairbrush or comb
    • Deodorant
    • Lip balm
    • Face wipes or gentle cleanser
    • Hair ties or clips
    • Sanitary pads (the hospital may provide some, but having your preferred brand can be helpful, I only use HoneyPot so I ordered their Postpartum pads HERE from Amazon)
  4. Personal Care Items:
    • Glasses or contact lenses (if applicable)
    • Prescription medications
    • Any necessary medical equipment
  5. Entertainment and Comfort:
    • Phone and charger
    • Camera or video camera (optional, for capturing special moments)
    • Books, magazines, or e-reader
    • Music or audio player with headphones
    • Your own pillow for added comfort
  6. Snacks and Drinks:
    • Light, energy-boosting snacks for both the laboring person and their partner/support person
    • Reusable water bottle or sports drink. Can’t live without my Yeti.
  7. For Baby:
    • Newborn clothes (onesies, sleepers, socks, and hats)
    • Swaddling blankets
    • Infant car seat (install it in advance and ensure you know how to use it properly)
  8. Postpartum Supplies:
    • Comfortable and loose-fitting clothes for after delivery

    • Nipple cream (if breastfeeding. Checkout these HERE from Amazon )

    • Comfort measures for healing (e.g., witch hazel pads, perineal spray Frida Mom has a great kit HERE on Amazon)
  9. For Partners/Support Persons:
    • Change of clothes and toiletries
    • Snacks and drinks
    • Entertainment (books, tablets, etc.) for downtime

Please remember that hospitals often provide certain essentials like basic toiletries, mesh underwear, and pads, but having your preferred items can provide added comfort during the stay. It’s also a good idea to pack your bag well in advance of your due date, around the 36th or 37th week of pregnancy, to be fully prepared when the time comes and have one less thing to do before labor.
