9 Tips on How to Travel With a Baby
Traveling with a baby may seem daunting, but with the right preparation, it can turn into a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Here are some practical tips to make traveling with your little one easier and safer.
9 Tips on How to Travel with a Baby
1. Plan Ahead
Start by choosing baby-friendly destinations and accommodations. Check if the places you plan to visit have baby amenities like cribs and baby-proofing. Make reservations ahead of time, and try to align travel times with your baby’s sleep schedule to minimize disruptions. If staying with family and friends it’s ok to purchase what’s needed based on the destination and return them after the trip. Or if travel often I suggest investing in a travel play/sleep pen as some hotels don’t provide cribs.
2. Pack Smart
Create a checklist of everything your baby might need, which should include:
- Diapers and wipes
- Baby food, snacks, and utensils
- Bottles, formula, or breastfeeding supplies:
- Daily change of clothes. I suggest 2-3 outfits per day
- Baby’s favorite toys and a few new ones
- First aid kit with baby-specific products
My exact travel checklist
- Terra Diapers– We use Terra Diapers as our travel and overnight diapers
- Milliemoon Diapers– We use Millimoon diapers as our everyday diapers
- Milliemoon Sensitive Plant-Based Baby Wipes
- Breastmilk Chiller– This will keep the milk cold all day.
- First Years Baby Bottle Warmer– We bring this to use in our hotel.
- Portable Bottle Warmer – We use the portable warmer on the go.
- Baby Bottle Brush Set-6 in 1 Bottle Brush Cleaner. We can wash bottles in our hotel room.
- Wearable Breast Pump Bag with Cooler
- Philips AVENT Anti-Colic Baby Bottles
- Graco Pack and Play Portable Playpen
- Any one of her Cocomelon Toys
- Gate check Bag for strollers and car seats
3. Choose the Right Gear
Invest in a portable stroller like a Doona, one of the best portable stroller out there. If not go for a lightweight stroller and a comfortable baby carrier. A good travel crib/playpen will also make nighttime easier for everyone. Make sure all the gear meets safety standards.
Invest in packing tools. It’s important that I bring everything I need and want for my baby. I use travel cubes and Vacuum Storage Bags to better pack for both myself and my baby. See my favorite Vacuum Storage Bags HERE and Packing Cubes HERE.
4. Prepare for the Journey
Whether you’re traveling by car, plane, or train:
- Keep important documents like your baby’s passport (for international travel) and vaccination records handy. And a copy of the baby’s birthday certificate just in case.
- Dress your baby in comfortable layers based on your destination.
- Pack a small/diaper bag with essentials to keep within easy reach. (Diapers, wipes, change of clothes, snacks, toys)
5. Keep a Routine
Try to maintain your baby’s regular routine as much as possible, especially in terms of nap times and feeding. A familiar routine can help your baby feel more secure in new environments. If you are sleep training keep your baby’s sleep schedule no matter what. Bring night lights and white noise as needed.
6. Be Ready for Anything
Always be prepared for delays and schedule changes. Bring extra supplies in case of unforeseen events. Staying flexible and calm is key to managing unexpected situations.
7. Take Regular Breaks
Whether you’re on a road trip or a long flight, regular breaks can help prevent your baby from becoming too restless. Use these stops for diaper changes, feeding, or simply to play, stretch and relax.
8. Protect Your Baby’s Health
Consult your pediatrician before traveling, and make sure your baby is up-to-date with vaccinations. Bring any prescribed medications and know where the nearest hospitals or clinics are located at your destination.
9. Capture the Moments
Don’t forget to take lots of pictures and make memories! Although traveling with a baby involves more logistics, it also provides unique moments of joy and bonding. I love doing matching outfits with my baby and sometimes I even plan a photoshoot based on the destination. For example, I always plan a family photoshoot while in Florida and in Jamaica.
By following these tips, your journey can be less stressful and more enjoyable. Remember, every baby is different, so adapt these suggestions to what works best for your child and your family. Happy, fun and safe travels!
